PC-3000 for HDD. Seagate F3. Step-by-step examination checklist

In addition to note about basic Seagate F3 diagnostics below is step-by-step checklist for Seagate F3 drives examination:

  1. Check start of spindle motor by 2>U
  2. Make HDD resources backup (RoM, P-List, Non Resident G-List, Translator, Disk Fw, Overlays)
  3. Check heads ability for reading and writing (Sa vol 3 FID 0x181 – head 0, FID 0x182 –head 1)
  4. Check vol 3, FID 0x17a. Write zeroes if you see ‘Diag Err OE’ in terminal.
  5. Check Media cache – vol 3, FID 0x346. Fill it by zeroes if you see any message in terminal that mediacache is corrupt.
  6. Work with SA → Edit HDD ID (Terminal). Switch off all flags except first one (“Show additional diag msg in terminal”).  If drive stays in BUSY don’t forget to set “Terminal” in Utility status.
  7. Clear DOS config tables by 7>m100
  8. Check Non Resident G-List by T>V40 command.
  9. Check G-List by T>V4. A lot of entries by one head  → damaged head. G-list overflow  → clear by T>i4,1,22. “Diag err” message in terminal …  → clear by T>i4,1,22
  10. Reset SMART, if there are no problems with heads and wide BAD-areas
  11. Initial translator diagnosis by T>V1. Output should not be empty. Both copies have to be readable (vol 3 fiD 0x28).
  12. Translator issue (user area can only be read before certain LBA). Run “Recover translator” tool, if it will give an error check this article.

    To ace blog staff: Please check if this instruction still correct in 2020? (fill MC with zeroes)

    Check Media cache – vol 3, FID 0x346. Fill it by zeroes if you see any message in terminal that mediacache is corrupt.

      MediaCache in Grenada and Pharaoh (if presented) is not the same as in SMR drives. We are going to make a new article for Rosewood drives as soon as we get all necessary information.
